Emergency Action Plan

To survive any situation, you need to be able to breathe. Point blank. The best gas masks are those that protect against NBC (nuclear, biological, or chemical) agents…typically military grade masks.

However, if you are out of town or away from your emergency supplies at your batcave, you need to know how to whip up an emergency gas mask.

Here’s how to create one with vinegar and a soda bottle.

  • 1-liter water or soda bottle
  • 1 cup of vinegar (apple cider preferably: not as harsh a smell compared to white vinegar )
  • Scissors
  • Handful of cotton balls

What to Do:

  1. Using a pair of scissors, cut the soda bottle or water bottle diagonally across the bottom. If you cut it correctly, when placed onto your face, it will fit nice and tight over your nose and mouth.
  2. Hold the bottle upside down and fill the bottle halfway with cotton balls.
  3. Saturate cotton balls with vinegar.
  4. Place the bottom over your mouth and nose and breathe through the bottle. Make sure you have a tight seal against the skin.
  5. For eye protection, use swim goggles that are shatterproof. To prevent your swim goggles from fogging up, wipe it with a drop of shaving cream and then buff it clean.
  6. Never wear contact lenses if there is chemical warfare or if you anticipate being exposed to pepper spray or tear gas.
  7. Wear long sleeves, long pants, and a hat to prevent chemical from coming into contact with your skin.

BONUS: If you want to be hands free, use duct tape to create a strap to hold the bottle in place over your noise and mouth

How it Works

Vinegar completely neutralizes and counteracts the effects of tear gas, smoke, infectious agents, airborne diseases, chemicals, and pepper spray.

Keep in mind a DIY mask is not the best option. It should only be used in an emergency or a Plan B.

Goes without saying, it is very primitive when compared to a standard military grade gas mask because it can never compete with fibers, vents, filters, valves, etc found in a military grade mask….

This is another level of prepping. This is if and when Shi* Hits The Fan! The ultimate level of protection if something crazy were to happen.

Buy extra air filters. Filters don’t last forever…Keep in mind that filters can be used up in an 8 hour time frame under some conditions. My rule of thumb is 3 per day x 3 days = 9 filters.

ONLY look into US Cavalry material. For example:

Draeger CDR 4500 CBRN Mask

  • NIOSH (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and CBRN (chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear warfare) approved, universal-sized mask.
  • It features a 40MM connection for a drinking canister
  • Similar to military gas masks used by the Air Force in Desert Storm
    • This protects against any type of pandemics or agents such as Anthrax, tear gas, Ebola, volcanic ash etc.
    • Standard 40MM NATO threading. This is a military grade air filter. The very best.
    • Extremely tough and durable
    • Protects from chemicals and biological materials
    • Good field of view

Foreign masks are dangerous, any Russian or Euro mask is nothing but a Halloween mask with eyelets. Most are knock-off’s with the real purpose of riot control agent defense.

A good mask can protect your lungs but won’t protect your skin from attacks.

You’ll need boots, gloves, and a chemical suit — along with a retreat like a safe room or a bunker…homemade survival kit!
